This, in turn, would make them the first non-mainstream band to sign to a mega-label. Nirvana released their second CD , "Nevermind", just two and a half years after "Bleach" was released. This is the first sign of "stardom" that the band received. It contained a number of "different, crunching, screaming" songs and also had their first single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on it. .
Smells Like Teen Spirit became Nirvana's most highly acclaimed and instantly recognizable song. Not many people can understand the exact lyrics but the hook-line stood out well enough to catch anyone's attention. Nevermind ended up selling ten million copies and made Nirvana a reported $550 million. This turned them into "overnight millionaires". Cobain himself was shocked at the fact that so many people accepted and liked his highly personal and passionate music. He even told reporters "none of the band ever, ever expected anything like this". It soon became obvious that this 24 year old rock star was not going to be able to withstand the lifestyle for long. He once quoted, "It there was a rock star 101 course, I"d really have like to take it". Kurt fell into heroin in the early 90's. He claimed that he used it as a shield against the rigorous demands of touring and to stop the pain of stomach ulcers or an irritated bowel. As all of this went on he still continued to write his very personal music. .
Kurt was upset that what he wrote and how it was interpreted were usually two completely different things. In February of 1992 Cobain skipped off to Hawaii to marry the already pregnant Courtney Love. Later in the year Nirvana released their third CD, "Incesticide" and the following August Cobain found himself in a hospital for heroin abuse. Shortly after his admittance, his daughter, Frances bean Cobain was born. In early 1993, the fourth CD "In Utero" was released and was soon at the top spots on the music charts.
