I would like to propose the ethical principles that an experiment must fulfill. Here is the list of ethical principles for both animals and people. .
The ethical conduct in the care and use of animals are: Investigators must Protect them from harm and discomfort; Provide adequate food, water, ventilation, and space; Not impose unnecessary stress on the animals; No person may, without justification, inflict pain, suffering, or injury, or cause it fear; and Animals should be carefully accustomed to the experimental conditions and cared for in the proper fashion before, during and after the experiment.
The ethical conducts for people are: Investigators must Obtain the informed consent of potential participants; Protect them from harm and discomfort; Treat information about individual participants confidentially; Fully explain the research afterward; Respect for people's rights and dignity; and People should be carefully accustomed to the experimental conditions and cared for in the proper fashion before, during and after the experiment.
The hypothesis of the experiment is "If high school students sleep at shorter amount of hours than their daily amount of sleep received, then their performance on an exam will be lower. The independent variable of this experiment is the hours of sleep the students get and the dependent variable is how well the students perform on the exam.
To test this, a group of students will be randomly assigned (ages 14 to 18). The students will receive the daily amount of sleep they normally receive (the constant). Then each one will do a sample, timed exam (a good sample would be a real SAT exam). Then the scores will be evaluated. On the next day, the students will sleep half of the average amount of sleep they normally receive (Ex. A student who normally sleeps for nine hours will be reduced to 4 ½ hours).
