I will be turning eighteen next week. Eighteen, what does Eighteen years of age really mean, it is just another year for me nothing special. My father is a WWII veteran. A thought passed through my mind today. According to my father to be drafted into the war you would have to be 18 years of age. It boggles my mind to think of all the young men who fought for this country some died. Well it comes to my mind if one has a civic duty to fight for their country at 18 why be deprived of other privileges to other civic duties? For that matter they were not allowed to vote for politicians who might send them there. .
I will be turning 18 and am mature enough to get married legally, pay taxes, and work ,why am I deprived of voting. I am also mature enough to know and see what is going on around me. I simply cannot understand why I have to wait to be 21. I feel that I am speaking for a lot of kids my age. Adults may not be aware of this but us young adults cares alo6 and has the sufficient amount of knowledge to be able to vote for both federal and state elections. My brother is two years younger than I am and when he turns 18 he will be able to fight for his country, it just makes no sense to me. I want to be able to vote for what I believe in. .
It is not official yet but I believe that I heard in the news that a 26th amendment is being proposed to congress to lower the voting age to 18. If president Nixon certifies this amendment formally soon you can be sure I will be at a voting booth. It looks really positive at the moment but one is not always sure.
Today is July 5,1971. The 26th amendment has been approved, it states:.
The right of citizens of the United States, who are 18 years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the united States or by any state on account of age.(section 2). Now 18 will mean a lot to me and to my children's children. I am finally getting the right to vote what I truly believe in.
