Americanization of Canada

This total immersion in an alternate culture has had a devastating impact on Canadian sovereignty - one evident offshoot of Americanization. By removing cultural diversity and replacing it with a watered down substitute - popular media, Canada is losing its national pride. Professor Bliss of the University of Toronto agrees, stating, "Canada has squandered its opportunities in everything from our social policy to our cultural achievements, our political life to our contribution to international diplomacy."" .
Globalization is pulsing quietly forward - but not in a tangible form of danger, like terrorism, AIDS, or violent deaths are. Canada faces a danger in using ham-fisted techniques like those characteristic of American foreign policy. Canada recognizes itself as a peaceful, generally well-mannered country as a result of their peacekeeping efforts and actions in World War II and being a home to many world-renowned charitable organizations. Yet there is the possibility that it is beginning to mimic the demanding unilateral diplomatic polices the Bush administration has uses. For example, Canada's has had an atrocious relationship with its Aboriginal peoples. Two months ago, the Grand Chief of the Assembly of First Nations stood amid the ashes of apartheid in South Africa and told the world that Canadians may fancy themselves as enlightened champions of human development, but in reality they tolerate systematic racism. The government exploits economic possibilities on the land that Native inhabitants own, and use the power of attorney to put Aboriginals in a limited position - like in the Mi'kmaq conflict in Cape Breton, where a community resisted the placement of a mine, for fear of damaging the environment. They were ignored because the land was on a Reserve and the government had exploited Aboriginal needs for employment to further their own economic agenda. The Canadian government only apologizes when the majority of its people realize a grievous mistake has been made.
