Samurai and Their Way of Bushido


            The samurai were known as an ancient group of warriors in the lands of Japan. They first started as managers acting for distant landowners who remained in the old capital of Kyoto. The Samurai of feudal Japan, during the 1000's and 1100's began to develop a tradition of values and personal conduct. This code came to be known as Bushido, it consists of integrity, endurance, thriftiness, courage, politeness, sincerity, and especially loyalty to a ruler. Only by practicing these virtues, a Samurai would maintain his honor. They took bushido very seriously and if they defied any rules of bushido they forfeit their honor and is punished by suicide. One of the most important codes in bushido is the code of self-sacrifice. This code puts emphasis on their "face," which is an element that represents a kind of pride that includes a horror of bringing shame on either their family or themselves.
             Samurais were one of the highest ranked warriors in the lands of Japan. They were also bodyguards that were hired for protection. They first arose as administrators acting for runaway landowners who remained in the old capital, Kyoto. They ruled Japan from 1400s to the early 1700s. The samurai were skilled warriors that fought for honor and respect. They had extensive skills in the use of the bow and arrow and the sword. Samurais were not scared to fight no matter what the odds were. If they died in battle then it would bring honor to their family. Samurais usually preferred to fight alone. In a battle they would call out their rank, family name, and accomplishments. Then they would find a samurai with similar rank and battle. Once one of the samurais won, they would cut off their heads as proof of victory. As the 1700s approached Japan was becoming more modernized and the need for Samurais was no more which led to the extinct group of warriors.
