Should the phrase Under God

The phrase "under God" was inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance by Congress in 1954, at the height of the Cold War after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus. These were religious leaders who wanted to distinguish the United States from what they regarded as a godless communism. The pledge then became both a patriotic oath and a public prayer. Recently, a California man sued Congress and President Clinton, in hopes to restore the pledge to its pre-1954 version. He called the pledge a "religious idea that certain people don't agree with." However, the words "under God" should not be taken out of the Pledge of Allegiance. .
The first reason that the phrase "under God" should not be taken out of the Pledge of Allegiance is because it has been a tradition for almost 50 years. Our culture values tradition as a whole. It would be more offensive to the majority of American citizens to remove the valued tradition from our pledge than to simply sustain it. Those who do not support it should just disregard it rather than bring it to national attention. Like several other traditions, one such as Christmas, this phrase is based on the Christian religion. However, no one has ever suggested that we stop making Christmas a national holiday because it honors the birthday of Christ. Another example of this is Good Friday. This day is made a holiday in honor of the day that Jesus was crucified. Some people say that it is unconstitutional to recite the words "under God" in the pledge, yet there is not a problem in making Good Friday a holiday. .
Another reason that the phrase "under God" should not be taken out of the pledge is because it is important to uphold the government that our forefathers created for us. This is one of the primary objectives of our nation. Not only is God mentioned in the Pledge of Allegiance but also in other aspects of government. The supreme court begins each session with the phrase "God save the United States and this honorable court.
