Marriage and Family in Changing Society


" Marriage has been changed throughout the human history. The two major changes in human life, which are the transition from nomadic way of life to agriculture and the Industrial revolution, have brought fundamental changes to marriage and family. These changes are the signs that show marriage and family are being modified to meet the changing circumstances. Around the world four major ways have been identified in which a marital partner is acquired. Marriage by capture is the least frequent method to capture a partner by force. This has occurred primarily in hunting societies: Marriage by purchase is another way of choosing the partner. For example, some kind of payment is given to the family of bride by groom or his family. Marriage by arrangement is the marriages that are arranged by parents and closed relatives. Finally marriage by consent which involves agreement and arrangement of the two people themselves. This is the practice in the United States and in most Western countries.
             There are two principal forms of marriages - monogamy and polygamy. Each of these involves different arrangements between men and women and has different implications for family life. Monogamy is the marriage of one man to one women at a time, this is the most familiar form in America. Monogamy was and is the most common form of marriage practiced around the world. Polygamy is the general term referring to material system which allows plural spouses at the same time. There are three forms of polygamy. Polygamy occurs when a man is married to two or more women at the same time. This system is often linked with economic and social status of the man. Additional wives need more resources and not many men can afford this polygymous system. Polyandry refers to the system of marriage of one woman to two or more men at a time. The system of marriage found very much rarely in the society. The last form is known as group marriage.
