Drawing blood is not as difficult as one might think. I started working in a hospital with no previous experience in drawing blood. I was taught to draw blood in one two-hour class. If I can learn to draw blood in two hours, then I am sure anyone can. There are only three detailed steps that need to be followed. First, use a requisition to verify all patient information. Second, get prepared for the blood draw. Third, actually draw the patient's blood.
First, a requisition sticker is printed with the patient's room number, name, birth date, and medical record number. Once you have a requisition for a blood draw, you must verify that all the information on the requisition is the same as the information on the patient's identification band. The verification of information is done to ensure that the blood is being drawn from the correct patient. After you have compared and verified all information, you can now get prepared to draw the patient's blood.
Second, to prepare for the blood draw, you must make sure you have all needed supplies on your blood tray. If you are missing even one of your needed supplies, the blood draw cannot be performed. You will need gloves, tourniquet, alcohol prep pads, needles, blood vials, needle box, cotton balls, tape, and of course your requisition. After you make sure that you have all of your supplies, you are ready for the blood draw.
Third, to draw the patient's blood there are many steps that must be followed. The following .
steps will walk you through how to do it:.
1. Put on your gloves.
2. Put the tourniquet on the upper part of the arm and have the patient make a fist.
3. Clean the selected vein with the alcohol prep pad.
4. Pull down on the skin and insert the needle slightly into the vein.
5. Fill the blood vial with blood by inserting the top of the vial into the back end of the needle.
6.After the blood tube is full, it will stop filling with blood, remove the tube from the needle.
