This is not the first time I have red an article about a student killing his/her fellow students. Violence in schools in on the rise, not just in the US but also here in New Zealand. I believe that this article won't be the last. So what causes these teenagers to commit such a brutal crime? Who is to blame? How can it be prevented?.
Children who think of themselves as misfits, who have been teased, put down, and have been made to feel somehow flawed. They want to experience attention, to experience being number 1! A fellow student described the attacker as a loner! Another student also said, " no one paid attention to him. He had a lot of anger". Friends and families play a huge role in our life. Without them life would be lonely, boring and filled with sadness. Families and friends are our life supports.
So, who is to blame? Is the media to blame? Some blame violence in the media and even sue over it. Families of 3 students killed in a 1997 high school shooting rampage in West Paducah blame violence in the media. Some even sued several entertainment companies for $130 million, charging that violent computer games. Are movies and video games really to blame? I believe if there's anyone to blame it should be the parents. Did the attackers parents stop their child from playing violent video games? Did they stop him from watching violent movies? Did the parents know that their child had no friends, that he was a loner? Did they know he was full of anger? With out help kids can explode. They"re like a time bomb.
So how can this disturbing crime be prevented? There is a growing trend linking the solutions to social problems to the teaching of moral and social values in our public schools. However, considerations of the role schools can and should play in the moral development of youth are themselves the subject of controversy. In my opinion, anybody can prevent this from happening. Students such as my self can prevent such a crime by getting to know new people especially the ones who look like they need a friend.
