In society today education is a major factor in life.
education holds much more power than those who don't possess one. In the four essay's The Idea Of A University by John Henry Newman, "How to Get a College Education" by Jeffery Hart, "Keeping Close to Home: Class and Education" by Bell Hooks and "What Does a Woman Need to Know?" by Adrienne Rich. All four the authors pretty much agree that education produces a citizen.
In the essay "The Idea of a University", Newman talks about how important it is to have liberal arts and how education produces a citizen. John Henry Newman states:.
It is the education, which give a man a clear conscious view of his own opinions and judgments, a truth in developing them, an eloquence in expressing them, and a force in urging them, to discard what is irreverent. He is at home in any society he has common ground with every class (49).
If one possesses an education it helps one evaluate what is true or false. It prepares one to gain the ability to think critical, to determine when something is necessary or not and it also help one feel comfortable in any environment or group age because he or she would know when to talk and how to talk to a particular audience.
In the essay "How to Get a College Education" Hart pretty much agree with Newman on how an education produce a citizen. Hart say, "Citizen should know the great themes of his civilization its important area of thought, it's philosophical and religious controversies, the outline of its history and it's major works. The citizen needs not to know quantum physics but he should know that it is there and what it means". (130) .
One should know their history. One cannot move on and learn new things and understand it if one does not know about his or her past. One does not need to know all little information about their history but just should know the basic, and that it is there and have been around for a long time.
