The Hoopster by Alan Sitomer

I remember this one time when my cousin and her black boyfriend went to a party. They were having a great time and they did not think that anyone would have a problem because of there difference of race. Later that night a black girl bumped into her on the dance floor and said to her boyfriend, "Why are you with this good for nothing Mexican girl, when you can have any black girl you want." After this comment my cousin realized that the majority of the people at the party were in fact giving them ugly looks. Remarks like this are made daily by people, but some people still believe that racism does not apply to them just because they did not hear the comments. It's as if they are trying to ignore the fact that there are some racist people. .
Andre's first serious experience with racism was when his article, MY BROTHERS was published by Affairs Magazine. Mr. Jarvin got a telephone call from some angry racist reader who threatened his company to get rid of Andre or else there would be problems for his magazine. Mr. Jarvin just ignored this call and did not even bother to tell Andre of what had just happened. Later on in the book Andre is viciously attacked. "But everybody knows, Mr. Anderson, the leader continued, that truly great writing is not about style. It is about substance. Consider this a little literary tip. Don't write any more of that nigger shit! BAM! The leader slammed the car door on Andre's hand, violently crushing his bones in the doorjamb. Andre screamed in pain."(pg.118) In this quote the author Mr. Sitomer is revealing the true ugly side of what racism can lead to. The leader slams Andre's hand so that Andre would not be able to write anymore, which is something Andre loves. Andre has finally had a first hand experience with racism. This experience impacts Andre in a major way. For awhile Andre shuts himself from the real world. He believes that nothing now makes a difference in his life.
