I made him feel like a good Samaritan." He then goes on to explain, "Ah, Maggie, in the world of advertising, there's no such thing as a lie. There's only the expedient exaggeration. You ought to know that.".
He then shows the audience that he is still being controlled by his mother when he has Maggie call to remind his mother of their "dinner date" later that evening. He expects that his mother will be "like a bloodhound" checking his breath for alcohol. He then he realizes, after he has sent Maggie back to the office to call his mother, that his mother is not at home . She is at the Plaza playing bridge with friends. He then meets his associates in the Oak Room Bar for drinks, while the background plays "It's a Most Unusual Day (how appropriate!). .
One of his friends/associates mentions his drinking habit saying: "You may be slow in starting, but there's nobody faster coming down the homestretch." Roger then insists that he must immediately send his mother a message. While "George Kaplan" is being paged, Roger signals to a bellboy. The coincidence of timing of the two events causes two men in the lobby to accidentally identify him as "Kaplan." As Thornhill is walking back into the lobby to send the message to his mother, he is strong-armed and confronted by the two "thugs" who are carrying concealed weapons. He is then forced into a car, and seated between the two men, which is waiting outside without any way to escape. He has been kidnapped and soon will be taken away from anything familiar to him. .
Looking confused, Thornhill is driven to a large mansion with stone columns and a sigh reading "Townsend" Long Island. Inside, Roger overhears about plans for a dinner party, and he proceeds to aggravates the two kidnappers: "By the way, what are we having for dessert?" He is then locked into the mansion's library. A distinguished gentleman, who the audience presumes to be "Townsend', but who is actually Philip Vandamn, enters the room.
