Paraphrase of Mother of the Groom

What the mother ("she") remembers most about her son ("he") when he bathed as a child were his glistening back and his small boots as they sat in a group of boots at her feet. With her hands resting in her empty lap (because her child has grown up and started his own life) she hears a daughter being welcomed into the family, as she will be her son's bride. The event makes the mother feel as if she lost her grasp on her son as early as his childhood. Soap was one able to free the wedding ring from her daughter-in-law's finger but now it lies bedded forever in her clapping hand.
The subject of the poem is a mother's son leaving his childhood behind and getting married. I believe the poet is trying to express the idea that things cannot remain the same forever; people grow and mature and have to make choices in their lives that may not please everyone important to them. The title suggests that a mother's son is getting married. It is significant to the work as a whole because it clarifies the statements about the wedding ring and the daughter being welcomed into the family.
This can be referred to as a lyrical poem because it is a short poem that expresses the feelings of one speaker, the mother. The words soap, ring, and boots are repeated in the poem. The boots are a part of the son's childhood but the ring used to describe the arrangement of the boots connects to the son's wedding ring and how the mother feels the time she spent with her son when he was a child is slipping away. It is also somewhat ironic that the soap that the mother describes as aiding her son in escaping her grasp is the thing that once eased the wedding ring off the wife's finger, but will no longer do so. The tone of the poem seems to be one of helplessness and nostalgia as the mother of the groom has to let go of her son and let him move on with his life.
