Breath Eyes Memory Symbolism

Symbolizing nature, strength and ironically belonging where you don't belong, the color yellow is associated throughout the book with daffodils. To the coca women these daffodils had special meaning as seen below .
Quote Sophie " Here we see Sophie acknowledging the strength of the daffodil against the elements and relating that strength to the strength of the woman that she perceives as her mother. The very tone of the poem indicates Sophie's pride for her Aunt and probably her desire to be a daffodil in her own light. To the coca women however these limber flowers had a dual meaning. they also meant striving, defeating the odds and laying down roots and eventually belonging where you don't belong as seen below. " quote Auntie" Understanding this relationship between a sense of belonging , daffodils and the color yellow is important because as we see later on in the book it plays a key role in helping us visualize the isolation that Sophie felt when she left Hati to move in with her mother . The yellow dress with daffodils that Sophie wore when she met her mother as well as Sophie's description of her first impression of the city as being a dismal place allow for us to visualize Sophie as uprooted daffodil taken far away from the place she called home to a totally different place where her strength will be tested.
As the book procedes from book one to book two there is a shift of color seen from yellow to red . the first indication of the occours right before Sophie leaves HAti for NYC the First time where Sophie describes what she was seeing as she left her village heading for the airport where she said "quote" . This could have been ment as a foresight into what Sophie future holds. .
