Our Inherited Liberties

One of the purposes of family is presenting this notion of passing on the ideas of our ancestors. The foundations and traditions of our ancestors facilitate the family of the present age. Examples of this are holiday traditions. There are many present families that practice Christmas traditions that were practiced by their ancestors. Family recipes also demonstrate this idea. Furthermore, in this passage the governmental methods are applied the same way. There aren't many present methods of government that weren't the brainchildren of people from the past. Therefore, when the people of the eighteenth century inherited and built upon the framework of the forefathers as Burke describes it in this passage, the government takes on the form of a unified family. .
The next two clauses in the passage say roughly the same thing only they are worded differently. In these clauses Burke declares, "binding up the constitution of our country with our dearest domestic ties; adopting our fundamental laws into the bosom of our family affections"(69). These clauses have both analogous ideas regarding government and family unity; with the words "fundamental laws," and "constitution" connoting governance and the phrases "family affections" and "domestic ties" connoting family unity. When Burke says "binding up the constitution of our country with our dearest domestic ties" he showing how the written rules and rights of government are closely matched with the rules and rights of one's home life. In other words, politicians and lawmakers establish decrees and ordinances with their families or home lives in mind. The rules and rights are ratified with the strongest interest and emphasis on their families. Burke then goes on to say, "adopting our fundamental laws into the bosom of our family affections." Burke uses this comment to build on the previous clause and metaphorically connect lawmaking and ratification to the holding of a child or family member to one's bosom.
