The Crucible

I have chosen to write about the play "The Crucible" written by Arthur miller. In this play Arthur miller shows that peoples pride can be more important than any thing else. In the play the Crucible many people are hanged. They will not say that they are witches to save there lives. Many of these people were well respected in the community and or had lots of land. Some of these people were called witches because they had a higher rank in the community. There were poor people who were called witches to because some people did not like them or there way of life. .
Many people in the crucible were condemned as witches because they would not say they are a witch so they could not be saved. So they would be hanged, Goody Osburn was one of the first accused for witchery and one of the first to be hanged for it. She said she was innocent but no one believed her. Just like Martha Corey she say she is not a witch then judge Hathorne says "how do you know, then, that you are not a witch" (miller 84). Then Martha replies "if I were, I would know it"(miller 84)it goes on like this and Martha is condemned as a witch. In the end of the play john proctor say that he will confess in witch craft. he then changes his mind when they ask for a signature they tell him he will hang his response is "I can. And there's your first marvel, that I can. You made your magic now, for now I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs. Give them no tear! Tears pleasure them! Show honor now, show a stony heart and sink them with it!" (Miller 144). He basically says I will not stoop down to there level so I will not tell a lie and hang.
The people of Salem that were hanged had so much pride in them selves they would not lie to save there own life. Goody Osburn would not confess so she was hanged like Martha Corey. John Proctor was going to lie and say he did commit something he did not but he changed his mind when they wanted him to sign it.
