             The Internet has had a relatively brief, but explosive history. It grew out of an experiment begun in the 1960's by the U.S. Department of Defence. The DoD wanted to create a computer network that would continue to function in the event of a disaster, such as a nuclear war. If part of the network was damaged or destroyed, the rest of the system still had to work. .
             There are two main parts of the Internet, the World Wide Web and Electronic Mail. The World Wide Web is pages and pages of information and Electronic Mail sends electronic communication. .
             ISP is short for Internet Service Provider, a company that provides access to the Internet. For a monthly fee, the service provider gives you a software package, username, password and access phone number. Equipped with a modem, you can then log on to the Internet and browse the World Wide Web and send and receive e-mail.

             Short for modulator-demodulator. A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over, for example, telephone or cable lines. Computer information is stored digitally, whereas information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the form of analogue waves. A modem converts between these two forms.
             Broadband is faster than conventional modems (about ten times faster the modern modems). By faster is meant that it delivers more data per second to your computer. This means there's a lot loss waiting times. Web pages load quicker: software, patches and updates download a lot faster. In fact you can download stuff you wouldn't even dream of downloading via a modem. But it goes beyond that. It'll change the way you work for the better. There's no need to log on to the Internet, because you're already there.
