Refugees in Australia

Amnesty international defines refugee as: a person who is outside their country of origin and genuinely risks serious human rights abuses because of who they are or what they believe. They cannot or will not return because their government cannot or will not protect them2. They illegal entry of these refugees into Australia came to a head with the Tampa and children overboard crises. My opinion on the topic is not one shared by many people. I am against people arriving in Australia illegally by boat, and for keeping people in so called "detention centers"" until they have been verified as genuine refugees. But the problem is deeper than this. More needs to be done to stop the refugees needing to leave their home in the first place. In such places as East Timor and Zimbabwe more needs to be done by the international community to stop quite obvious human rights abuses and unfair and un democratic governments, ruling by fear. .
All refugees have basic human rights; these include:.
             - Protection against discrimination .
             - Freedom of religion .
             - Identity and travel documents .
             - Work rights .
             - Housing, education and relief .
             - Protection against penalties for illegal entry .
             - Freedom of movement.
The Australian governments policy on detention from the immigration act is that all people who arrive in Australia without a visa or an acceptable visa or travel document or those overstayed their visa, or had their visa cancelled can be detained. The political line of the Tampa crisis was to "send a message"" that Australia was no longer an easy option when it came to asylum seekers. The majority of Internet sites I have found on this topic have been pro refugees being let into Australia. One could take this as a popular opinion, that most Australians believe that the government should let more people immigrate to the country. Yet a Bulletin Morgan poll which surveyed voter intentions at the end of August 2002 (before the Tampa crisis) found that 54.
