Even though all this bad fortune happened to him, he still held on to the belief that Pangloss taught him that is this is the "best of all possible worlds." After Candide deserted the war, he went to Holland and found Pangloss as a beggar. Pangloss told Candide that Cunegonde and her family were murdered. Candide was devastated. His love was dead and he was losing hope. To be in despair is to lose all hope, but Candide was not yet in despair. .
A man named Jacques helped him and Pangloss by giving them a job and a home. On there way to Lisbon, Jacques dies when he fell overboard in a furious storm. When they reached Lisbon, Pangloss was hung because of his optimistic beliefs and Candide was whipped. When Candide was being whipped Cunegonde saw him and told an old woman to bring Candide to him. Candide was so happy to see Cunegonde was alive, but was saddened to find her to be two men's mistress, one who was the Grand Inquisitor. Candide killed both men when they arrived to greet Cunegonde. Candide, Cunegonde, and the old woman then left for Buenos Aires. Candide was finally happy because he was with his love. Cunegonde was in despair though, because she went through so much torture and was raped by many men. When everything finally seemed to be going Candide's way, he had to flee Buenos Aires because they found out that he was the murder of the Grand Inquisitor. Candide fled with his new valet Cacambo. Candide ran into Cunegonde brother, who was now a baron, and tells him that he also survived the attack like his sister. They both had much joy to find out each other are alright and alive. Both of them wanted to get Cunegonde to Paraguay. Candide told the baron that he wishes to married his sister and he got very angry because he is not of royal blood. Candide and the baron fought and Candide stabbed him.
Candide and Cacambo flee and find themselves in a strange country. They were confronted by a tribe known as Biglugs.
