In the spring of 2000 a woman was murdered in Jacksonville, Florida. Brenton Butler a fifteen year old boy was taken into custody for twelve hours. There Brenton was tormented and the police persuaded brenton to admit he was the killer. Brenton was innocent. Michael Crowe a fourteen year old boy of Escondido, California has a similar situation. His sister was murdered of course he was taken into custody. After 27 hours of no food, no sleep, and constant yelling Crowe admitted to killing his sister. Crowe was innocent.
In both of these cases these boys were held with no food, no sleep, and no contact. The police officers would yell and scream at these boys. Telling them that they have committed a serious crime. They would tell them that they could leave if they just admitted what they've done. Finally after hours of agony they both admitted to a crime that neither had committed. This is something that has happened to many kids today. About 35% of wrongful convictions are false confessions. .
In my opinion I think that police officers do this to say they've found the killer. Although we know this is not right, to them it could mean a bonus. I guess no one really knows why police do this or what they are thinking at the time. What matters is that this is happening all of the time, too many children are being convicted of crime that they didn't commit. Brenton happened to be at the right place at the wrong time. He was a black male that could have fit the description of couldn't have but he was held in custody and then admitted to a crime that he would have never thought of committing. Crowe just happened to be the brother of a girl that was murdered so therefore he had to be the one who kill her, right? No not right he was innocent!.
