Comparing Filipino and American Traditions


Therefore, public transportation is used more frequently in the Philippines than in the United States. The roads in the Philippines, in contrast to the United States, are not always in good condition for driving and traffic is very chaotic (Foster 166). The inexpensive form of transportation is the jeepney which is a converted jeep used as minibus carrying eight to ten passengers (Devine and Braganti 217). This is equivalent to America's bus. .
             When driving in a car, Filipinos have honored seats. The least honored seat in a Filipino car is the front passenger seat and the most honored is the seat directly behind that (Foster 171). Filipinos give honor to the elders of their family because of their wisdom. To show respect for elders the forehead is placed on their hand (Devine and Braganti 203). .
             The way business is conducted in the two countries are very similar, yet of course have its differences. English is the language used when conducting business deals or contracts (Schaefer 13). The monetary unit of payment in the United States is the dollar and in the Philippines it is the peso (Devine and Braganti 214). The Philippines uses the peso because the Spanish brought it over when they colonized it. .
             To circulate popularity and recognition of a company, business cards are used in both countries. However, in the Philippines there is a particular way in which these are given and received. A business card should be in good condition when presented. It should be given by holding the upper right and left hand corners with both hands. It should be facing the recipient. Also, the card should be received with two hands on the upper right and left hand corners and placed in a business card holder or a chest pocket (Foster 162).
             Wining and dining is a very common method to close deals and to persuade clients to close deals (Devine and Braganti 216). Unlike leisurely dinners, the host of a business dinner pays the bill.
