If a person has enough power he can get away with anything. The movie Chinatown illustrates this very well. Lieutenant Escobar knows that Noah Cross is too powerful to be convicted of anything. Noah Cross killed Hollis Mulwray, Jake Gittes and Lieutenant Escobar know about that, but Noah Cross doesn't care because he knows that nothing can happen to him. That fact is a horrible thing for the people that are innocent and are against Noah Cross, this is seen when all the characters meet in Chinatown in the end of the movie.
When Jake sees Lieutenant Escobar in Chinatown, he tells him about Noah Cross and how he was the one that committed the murder, but Escobar's reply was for Jake to go wait in the car. No matter how hard Jake tries to explain the situation to Lt. Escobar, Escobar keeps on ignoring him. At that moment Noah knows that nothing is going to happen to him no matter what Jake says, and he tries to overpower Evelyn so he could get to Katherine. Noah Cross continues his attempt to get to Katherine even though Evelyn is blocking him. He knows that Evelyn can tell the police that he raped her, but that doesn't concern him because he will not face any consequences. .
Clearly a person as powerful as Noah Cross can get away with anything, including rape and murder. This is demonstrated by the actions of Lt. Escobar and Noah Cross's own fearless actions. Chinatown illustrates the motivation for one to obtain power since it enables people to control the world, a fact that is still true today and always will be. .
