Claudio Monteverdi was also know as one of the most important composers of the early baroque period. Monteverdi was born on May 15th, 1567 in Cremoa, Italy. Throughout his life he served as a singer, violist, leading composer, husband and father. Monteverdi died on November 29th, 1643 in Venice.
Claudio Monteverdi's love for music began at a young age. Marco Antonio Ingegneri introduced Monteverdi to music. The two of them studied music together for several years. At age 15, Monteverdi composed his first work, a set of three-part motets. Soon after, he began experimenting with the musical dramas of Jacopo Peri, a music director of the Medici family. Monteverdi began to develop a respected repution in several different types of music. Music such as orchestrated operas, ballet music and dialogues, fasinated Monteverdi.
In 1607 Monteverdi produced his first musical drama titled, Orfeo. This particular opera was a big success and an important development in the history of the opera. Orfeo, expressed dramatic emotions and was performed with outstanding vocals and highly impressive acting. This musical drama also consisted of a large orchestra with alot of variety. The orchestra played throughout severak scenes and was able to set the mood of the drama. Shortly after producing Orfeo, Monteverdi began working on another musical drama, known as Arianna in 1608. Arianna also showed incrediable talent and established Monteverdi as a highly talented opera composer.
In 1613, Claudio Monteverdi became a music director at St. Mark's, Venice. By his time word of Monteverdi's musical talent had spread throughout Europe. Musicians from all over the country came to study with him. Countries such as England, Germany, and Scandinavia grew egar to learn about him and his work. Monteverdi was responsible for much of St. Mark's for over thirty years. His responsiblilities included constructing the choral repertoire and composing all of the musical entertainment for state occasions.
