The Roles as A President


            The president must play many leadership roles during his presidency; there are six important roles. First, the president is the United States" chief of state. This role consists of the president performing ceremonial and large non-political duties on behalf of the whole nation; for instance, lighting the national Christmas tree. Second, the president is the United States" chief legislature. In this role, it is the president's objective to offer guidance and to set priorities for congress by proposing and pursuing a legislative agenda. Also as chief legislative, he can use the veto power to block bills they oppose. This is a very important role as president because if he fails to provide congress with a substantial agenda he opens himself to criticism. Third, the president is the United States" chief executive. In this role, the president is to appoint leaders for federal agencies, which senate must confirm, and attempt to direct their actions through executive orders. The president and congress share the responsibility for overseeing the work of the bureaucracy. Fourth, the president is the Untied States" opinion leader. Through this role, the president is expected to identify and propose solutions for the problems that our nation faces. Fifth, the president is the United States" chief diplomat. As chief diplomat, he represents the United States to the rest of the world. The president is the one man in the Unite States whom the citizens of the United States expect to speak out on the nation's behalf when foreign policy crisis occurs. Sixth, the president is the United States" commander in chief. This role is to allow the president to justify and action that he must take to protect the nations security from foreign military threats.
