Country

There is nothing like the country to a small boy who knows no better then where he was raised. For me it was like nothing else trees and land as far as I could walk in a week, no city lights so there were stars everywhere when you looked up in a field, no pollution both noise and smell, and no people no over crowding, no one to scare off the wildlife.
My parents owned twenty acres of land that was good for absolutely nothing as far as farming or trying to grow anything at all. Around us there were thousands of acres that you couldn't cover in a week if you tried. Even though the land wasn't good for anything it still was the most beautiful land you have ever seen. Tall pines that have never seen human steps cross beside them, oak trees that a grown man couldn't reach around, and for a young boy the best thing of all was the slick messy red clay to play in. I remember taking trips on my four-wheeler off into the woods for a whole day, and seeing things each time that were new to me. I would come back messy and knowing I was in for it because I would always have on a new article of clothing that my mother would have to clean. There were creeks running through our property that you could swim in, run around jumping on huge boulders, and even catch fish to bring home to eat. On one particular excursion into the woods one day I found an old home site deep in the woods, the cabin had long since rotted away but the chimney still stood erect but crumbling under times weight. I also remember finding an old slave graveyard near the house with small tombstones, words barely visible but could be read. I would run my hands over them feeling the time pass as I sat there feeling as if I was back in the day with those people.
A city setting makes a country boy's heart sink to think of having to live in one. It's so nice to be able to sit in a field spread out with no noise and no pollution.
