Across the country football is played at hundreds of colleges. It is a tradition that dates back over a hundred years at some schools. Lately college football has broke away from the tradition that it once followed and has become a scandalous and commercial game. From recruitment to the National Championship, a lot has changed, to develop this new game played today. But have all these changes that it has gone through been for the better?.
College football players are recruited out of high school by colleges. This process usually starts with a contact with a coach and the high school prospect. Several colleges recruit many of the top prospects throughout the nation. The prospect usually narrows down the choices of schools to a few. The student then visits the school, at the expense of the school for some prospects. "Prospective student-athletes may take no more than five expense-paid visits to schools." (WeissBerg 58) During these visits, prospects check out the campuses, talk with the coach, and check out the team. On a resent visit, by a California running back to the University of Oregon, there was no typical visit. The running back went to a party near the school, and was offered drugs and sex. The running back and his family did not like the way this reflected the school and chose to go to another university. .
Scandals like this are not uncommon when it comes to recruiting players. "There is growing alarm on college campuses that some recruiting weekends are veering out of control a recent spat of embarrassments and criminal investigations involving sex and alcohol at recruiting parties for visiting prospects- (Time to Recruit Players, Fish) Many colleges are rumored to have wild parties while recruits are visiting to help entice them to going to that school. The parties that prospects attend are usually hosted or partied by football players already attending the school the recruit is visiting.
