Dali born into a prosperous Spanish household. His mother a faithful Catholic who attended church regularly and would have urged her family to attend. His father was a public notary of Figuerus and conscious of his status. Dali's parents provided him the best education helping to develop the extremely intellectual abilities of his mind. Dali also had a legitimate ability for drawing which was sketched out in cartoons in his exercise books. This talent was encouraged by family friend and local artist Ramon Pitchot. As an adolescent much family time was spent at the seaside home in Cadaques. This influenced a Dali as he mingled with local fishermen and working class, here he herd folktales and superstitions of towns people. The imagination of Dali was affected which is seen in the way he incorporates illusions with traditional tales an example Enigma of William Tell 1933 (Fig 2). Dali uses the traditional legend of William Tell but adds illusions seen here in the distorted figure. In 1922 he went to San Fernando Academy, Madrid while there he met Luis Bunel and Federico Garcia Lorca these artists were from a contemporary Spain where they confronted the catholic church political structure this excited Dali who began questioning methods of the Academy which he became expelled from in 1926 for promoting tiresome behaviour. Students looked for new ideas Dali wanted to look back to masters of the Renaissance in Italy who perfected their technique this went against contemporary teaching. Dali's work at this time explored contemporary crazes like impressionism which can be seen in his self portrait with Raphael's neck (Fig 3).
