The Power of Culture

As a newcomer from China to the United States, I have seen both American culture and Chinese culture through the youth behavior. Being a teenager, an important part in my life is attending school. I have already been a high school student in China before I came to United States. Also since I came to United States, I spent most my daily life in Davis Senior High School. Because American school rules are unlike Chinese school rules, the way that American high school students behave is different.
In American high school, the students are carefree. They can drink water or eat food; they can get out of their seats without asking for the teacher's permission. Also they can wear whatever they want if the clothes are appropriate. However, in China, students cannot drink or eat in class time; they can't get out of their seats unless there is an emergency, with the teacher's permission. Most high schools require students to wear their uniforms when they are at school.
The reason for such a big difference stems from the dissimilarity amongst the cultures. Liberty or freedom is a vital .
component in American culture. People think of independence often. Individual freedom is so significant in American people's eyes. They dislike restrictions in all aspects of their life, especially the American adolescents. Because of growing up in this culture, high school students believe that if they are thirsty, they feel entitled to drink water due to their rights. It doesn't matter whether the teacher is talking or the class is not over yet. No one or no rule should dictate whether students could drink during class.
But Chinese culture is stricter. Uniform customs are considered as essential as laws. Everybody confines his or her behaviors, including the teens. Although unlike the laws, if you break the customs, there is no punishment, most people obey the customs anyway. Though youngsters dislike rules, their parents teach them to follow rules at young age.
