The eye-opening moment in my life had begun one evening when I decided to visit my grandfather. He was cleaning one of his handguns, of which he had a fairly extensive collection. I don't know if it was the smoothness or how they felt in my hand, but they intrigued me. I was only 14 at the time, and I had never handled a gun before. "I was just about to leave to do some target shooting. Do you want to come along?" asked granddaddy. I agreed without hesitation. This was the first time he invited me along, and it excited me. I wasn't sure if I really wanted to fire a gun, but I couldn't pass up this opportunity. We jumped in his truck and headed out. He told me we were heading out to an area next to the Brazos River. The drive took about 15 minutes, just enough time for the eagerness to build. Even though I was excited, there was still that unease in the back of my mind. We arrived at our destination. There were bullet casings lying everywhere. It was obvious we weren't the only ones who chose this spot. Granddaddy gave me a quick lesson on shooting a handgun. We set up a few cans on an old rotten log and fired off a few rounds each. We were having a good time, but neither of us had any idea of the consequences of our actions. The deputies showed up not long after we started shooting. Their appearance induced a nervous silence that seemed to last an eternity. The only thought I had was that we weren't supposed to be shooting where we were. .
"One of your bullets came 10 feet from killing someone," said one of the officers. Those words entered me like a bolt of lightning and electrocuted every last bit of innocence I had left. I didn't know what to think at that point. The only words I could mutter were, "Pardon me?" We couldn't figure out how this could have occurred. They informed us that one of our bullets had strayed and entered a man's home through his window. The bullet lodged in the wall 10 feet from where he was sitting.
