The Billings who came from one of the finest families in Philadelphia were sort of different than the Simons. Serena, the daughter, was really nice to Meribah. They became the best of friends even though they were totally different. Mrs. Billings was very nice and independent, most of the times she would do what she thought was right even though her husband would not think the same. In the other hand Mr. Billings seemed nice at first but later in the story he showed his real face, he was selfish and turned out to be a thief. I liked Serena and her mother because they were both nice to Meribah even though they considered her different. But I dislike Mr. Billings because he was really selfish even with his own family, and because he was a thief who never helped others.
The Whitings were also very friendly and nice to the Simons. They were sort of funny and gave the story a little touch of humor during very difficult and serious events. They sang and sometimes even danced to put the rest of the company in a good mood. They were everything but selfish. I liked this couple because they were nice, funny, giving and because they were very friendly with the Simons.
In my opinion one of the most important places in the story was the Valley of La Fontenelle. This place was very important because it was the only place where Meribah knew it was really her home. Even the first time she was there she imagined staying in the valley forever. In the end of the story, when she had a chance to leave with Mr. Goodnough and start a new life, she chose to find her way back to the Valley of La Fontenelle where she felt she really belonged, she really liked this place because here she could grow things, and she believed she could put things in the ground and make something out of it. .
This story is mainly about Meribah's journey. It's a story about friendship, betrayal, and love. It's a story about life.
