How valid is it to regard soap opera as television for women

             This work looks at the particular ways in which soap operas are stigmatized because of sexism, and also the negative stereotypes of soap opera viewers that this leads to. Women overcome direct criticism and opposition in order to keep watching soap operas.
             There are many obvious reasons why women are attracted to soap operas. First of all, the viewer knows that this show is not remotely true. Many scenes in these soaps are incredibly ridiculous and unreal. So why do women enjoy watching a show in which they are aware of how false it is. I have read that in the Unites Kingdom people would probably prefer to gossip about characters in the soaps than about their own acquaintances. .
             My argument is that soap operas, like women's talk or gossip are part of a woman's culture that exists alongside dominant culture. The soap opera reflects the pleasure that women get from talking, the social side of women's domestic culture.
             Not only do soap operas deal with subjects that are of particular concern to women under patriarchy, i.e. Domestic matters, kinship and sexuality, but they also do it in a way that answers questions and acknowledges the contradictions in women's lives.
             Women talk about soap operas too, and therefore incorporate them in to their own network of friendship with other women. Therefore do women use soap opera viewing as an occasion to create a sense of community with others? When watching any soap opera, the viewer will see that there are a great number of actresses. This is simply because of the wide range of female viewers. The producers are supplying the viewers with what they demand. The viewers can identify with the wide range of female characters. There are always a wide range of female characters in every soap opera. Characters such as Grandmothers, married women, marriageable women, mature sexy women, spinster types and young women are all involved in soap operas. (Liladhar) All these characters make the show more interesting for women to watch especially if they can relate to in particular character, or maybe know someone else as well who they think is identical to one of the other characters.
