Good Wives

In Good Wives, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich claims that "the story of women is important not simply because it affected what we have come to know as the history of early New England but because it was an integral and essential part of that history" (240). I strongly disagree with this statement. This may be what Ulrich claims she believes, however, there are many examples and a lot of evidence that say the opposite thing in her book. In almost every story or example that I read, she disproves her claim. During the time period of 1650-1750, husbands ran the households and the wives did exactly what was expected of them and what they were told to do. They were only allowed to do what their husbands allowed them to do.
One example I read was about Jacob Barney going to Phillip Cromwell's house to negotiate a marriage. At the time, Mr. Cromwell was sick which resulted in some hearing loss. Mr. Barney directed his first question towards Cromwell and was surprised when Mr. Cromwell "pointed to his wife and said that whatever she agreed upon, he would make it good" (36). In this example Mrs. Cromwell is showing some authority and involvement, but it is only because her husband is allowing her to. Had Cromwell not been sick, he would have answered all of Mr. Barney's questions himself without any input from his wife.
Some women did handle some of their husband's work, but this .
Was only in a few cases. "Thus, a wife with talent for business might become a kind of double for her husband, greatly extending his ability to handle affairs" (40). This shows how a husband will allow his wife to take on some responsibilities for something such as a business; however, it is only done to better himself. No one would know that a wife had helped her husband except him or her. So yes a wife did sometimes help out her husband when he needed help, however, she wouldn't really put a dent in history because no one would know.
