Picture a getaway you were looking forward to for six months; pushing yourself through each long day before that great day of departure. I am referring to a northern fishing adventure. An adventure my grandparents and family decided to take. Imagine constantly looking at the photographs of the location and reading the vivid diction which described the getaway. It looked luxurious and astounding in the brochures. The trip was very expensive, but looked worth every dollar. According to the information booklet, it was top of the line as far as vacations go, and it was very remote. The sole purpose of the vacation for my family was fishing. For fishermen such as myself and my father, this was an awesome opportunity to simply relax and enjoy the true north. This much-awaited adventure, however, did not turn out to be what was expected. Pictures are not always as they seem, and wording can be very deceiving.
The journey began with a ten-hour drive in a northerly direction of Ontario. The geographical landscape changed slowly as we crept up on the north. Every minute became more rugged and natural. All you could do was "take it all in" with the freshness of the air and exhilaration of the northern getaway. Anticipation was building with every hour that passed to our destination. In the final moments before we reached the lodge, we realized the magnitude and shear beauty of the wilderness. Beautiful, crystal clear lakes littered the north and presented themselves everywhere. Trees as far as the eye could see. The air was pure, crisp and clean, and the sun glistened and bounced off of the clear lake surfaces. The rock face was more bold and jagged, and stood out of the green-covered land. Natural aroma of the woods was overpowering and gave us a sensation of awe and amazement. Wildlife became more prevalent than in the more southernly regions. A bear was one of the of our sightings on the way.
