This African creation story comes from the Efik tribe of Nigeria. The creator Abassi, created two humans, but soon after creating them he decided not to let them live on the earth. Abassi's wife, Atai, begged and pleaded with him to let the humans remain on the earth. Abassi relented, but in order to keep the humans from growing food or hunting animals, he insisted that they eat all their meals with him and forbade them to multiply. At first the man and the woman came and ate with Abassi, but soon the woman began to grow food in the ground. Then they did not come to eat with Abassi any more, and the man joined his wife in the fields. Soon afterwards children began to appear, and Abassi blamed his wife for what had happened. Atai told him that she would take care of the disobedient humans and sent death and discord to keep the humans on their place. .
This is the true biblical account of creation. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day. Then God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters." Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day. Then God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear"; and it was so.
