Vivisection is the act of experimenting on animals. Charles Mayo, founder of the Mayo Clinic, said of vivisection,"It should be abolished. I know of no achievement through vivisection. Every scientific discovery could have been obtained without such barbarism and cruelty. The whole thing is evil". I believe vivisection is wrong because it is very cruel to the animals, experts say it is inaccurate, and there are humane alternatives.
First, vivisection is very cruel and painful for the animals. Two main forms of product testing are the Draize Eye Irritancy Test and toxicity test. The Draize test involves dripping the test substance into a rabbit's eye and recording the damage over 3-21 days. The rabbits are confined in restraining devices to prevent them from clawing at the painful injured eye. The other test is the toxicity or lethal dose test. This test indicates the amount of a given substance, which is necessary to kill a certain species. Animals are forced fed, injected, or forced to inhale substances such as laundry bleach or liquid drain cleaner in order to determine the toxicity. This causes their internal organs to rupture causing convulsions, massive bleeding, and eventual death. Both of these tests are cruel because they are very painful for the animals.
Next, experts say animal testing is inaccurate and unnecessary. They say the Draize test is inaccurate because rabbits" cornea is thinner and more sensitive than a human's eye. Consequently, results of these tests cannot accurately be compare to humans. Toxicity tests are inaccurate because many animals actually die from the shear volume of the dosage they are given, not because the substance itself is poisonous. Other animals die from the severe burns to their throats and stomachs after they are forced fed .
