Heaven

Literary Device: The carriage is an allegory for the Church. It comes under attack from the eagle and the fox and then the dragon, each of these creatures representing a different ailment the church has had to deal with.
Brief Plot synopsis: Dante is taken through the wall of fire at the top of purgatorio and lead to the waters of Lethe. There he sees a heavenly procession.
Question of the day/Important ideas: Dante has to go through the wall of fire because his heart has to be purified. The angel of chastity is singing the hymn, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God" from Matthew 5:8. Dante must undergo this fiery purging in order to advance any further.
Cultural value conveyed: It seems as if Dante does not focus much on Christ. He uses elaborate symbolism and complex allegory, so perhaps his true focus is on Jesus and I just don't see it. But even through what we have seen so far, Dante has been more concerned with what he had to do and go through to attain purity and reach the final level of heaven. He recognizes that he would not be able to achieve the final realm without Christ, but it still seems like this is just a starting point for him to begin his journey, which is mostly concerned with the things he and Beatrice have to do. .
Reaction to the passage: The procession is very confusing although this version of the reading offers insight (if not always Biblically correct) into what Dante may be representing. The image of Christ as a Griffin is very interesting and I think the creature is a good fit due to its dual nature. The only part that seemed strange to me is that Beatrice is the main focus of this section, not Christ! Maybe Dante has to go through more purification before he can realize the importance of Jesus and right now all he can understand is the divine compassion manifested in Beatrice, but I pray that when I die I will have to look into the eyes of Jesus Christ and confess my sins, nothing else will be acceptable for it is him that I have sinned against.
