Sting has a unique style just as Jimmy Buffet and Tool, however what they lack is Sting's massive popularity as a musician throughout the world for more than twenty years in the realm of "pop" music. Unlike Jimmy Buffet, Sting began his career in the light of the music-video television generation and has maintained a steam locomotive's momentum throughout the years of video and radio play with both his early band, the Police, and his success as a solo artist. The elements of style are sometimes vague due to his "pop" sound, but the use of syncopated and intertwined musical lines from the guitar, bass, and the percussion give a basis for his style. On his last two albums he incorporated the trumpet as an instrument in his band, an instrument which has a similar timbre to his own voice as he has aged. Another of his stylistic traits is his use of the classical guitar on many of his personal ballads dealing with his past and his personal beliefs. Sting also loves to work in odd meters as well. He often will use seven-eight, five-eight, and nine-eight to get his point across through music. He loves music as a whole. Every style in every age of musical form, and even nature itself has influenced him from time to time. .
Genre/Lyrics.
Even with the influences he has amassed, his music appears simple at first, until you listen closer and peel back his layers. There you will find what makes him such a great song writer. It is his ability to creat interest through constrasting materials and the amazing musicianship that he has managed to find for use on his all of his albums. Another distinguishing mark for Sting, is his lyrical quality that he uses in describing important issues about life, not politics, (he makes sure we realize this). But all of these stylistic traits make up the music of Sting.
He has incorporated lyrics from earlier songs into his more recent ones. One of his favorite lines is from a song he wrote with the Police.
