Meet the Parents is a humorous look at how a person tries to fit in to a family that is very different than he is. I would say that the Byrnes family depicted in the film deviates more from most of society than Greg does from the family. This movie is really enjoyable because I think that almost all of us have been in Greg's situation at one time or another in our lives.
When thinking of the deviant acts in the movie one has to look at it from two different angles. Greg did a lot of things that deviated from how the Byrne's family did things, but at the same time, the Byrnes family deviated with how most of society would do things. By that I mean that the norms of society weren't always followed by the Byrnes'. Greg did a lot of things that made him look different than his fiancé's family, but they were pretty small in comparison to how the family seemed to differ from most of society. One thing Jack did that made him stand out from other fathers in law is that he gave Greg a lie-detector test. To me this is pretty odd. I don't know of too many girls' parents who would give their daughters' boyfriends a lie-detector test. While this isn't a crime, in my opinion it does violate some folkways. Their folkways seemed to be what caused the most problems between Greg and the family. They just had different ways of looking at the world.
I think that to some degree Greg trying so hard to fit in actually caused more problems. Greg seemed to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what the family expected him to do and trying to be what he thought they wanted him to be. I get like that sometimes, I'll try to figure out what other people want me to be like or what they want me to say and many times that ends up getting you further in the hole that it does getting on their good side. I think that happened a lot with Greg. He tried to be like them, when he should have just been himself.
