Analysis of Young Goodman Brown

             3. The central conflict, in my point of view, is internal conflict because I think that young Goodman Brown versus his conscience.
             4. The conflict is resolved through the death of young Goodman Brown for his "dying hour was gloom.
             5. The limited omniscient third person narration is used in this story and works very well. It offers interesting insight to the reader on Brown's behalf and leaves the reader not knowing the state of mind or intentions of the villagers. This uncertainty is necessary to build the suspense. I think that the point of view has a great effect on the reader because the limited omniscient third person narration is similar to telling someone a moral story or in this case, giving the reader an example of what not to do.
             6. The setting is mostly located in a dark, gloomy forest. Hawthorne is able to create a dark gloomy setting through little description. The encounter of Goodman Brown with the villagers and his wife is the time when the setting is greatly explained with words such as "shadow", "dark", "blazing" "candles" etc. Related to these words, the atmosphere is very gloomy and dark as well as frightening. Even in the beginning, the setting is gloomy because the story reads "Young Goodman Brown came forth at sunset into the street at Salem village". The sunset gives the setting its gloominess and the wors "Salem" makes you think directly of evil witchcraft.
             7. The initial incident, in my opinion, is the time when young Goodman Brown leaves his wife to meet up with the devil. I think so because this is the incident that is initial to the climax, which is the encounter of Goodman Brown with his wife and the other villagers at a "satanic" meeting.
             8. The most important event relating to the central conflict is the encounter of the devil and the journey, or walk, through the forest. I think so because this is the moment in which all the evil takes its beginning. Goodman Brown's fellow-traveler tries to pull over young Goodman Brown to the dark and evil side symbollically by offering Goodman Brown his staff because Goodman is "so soon weary".
