Prussia


            
             The German unification began to make progress when Fredrick William IV reorganized the German Confederation under Prussian leadership. In 1858 his brother King William I took over leadership after Fredrick William IV became very ill, he rejuvenated the Prussian military and made Otto von Bismarck the chancellor to help him deal with the political collision of nationalism and liberalism (Sullivan 570). .
             Bismarck defied liberal opposition in Landtag and by earning military victories on foreign ground restored nationalism. The first test of the Prussian army was in 1864 when Prussia declared war on Denmark and the Danish were soon defeated. The next step was to become one of Europe's supper powers. Prussia became allies with Italy and manipulated Austria into war. Prussia, even though outnumbered overwhelmed the Austrians and defeated them relatively quickly. The only war penalties Austria had to pay was to give Italy the land of Venetia (Sullivan 570). .
             Prussia began to form an organized government, which was autocratic. The king was known as the President. Bismarck filled the administrative office and the Bundesrat and the Reichstag composed the legislative body. The Bundesrat was composed of the twenty-two state governments of Germany. The Reichstag were members of society who were elected to office. Bismarck soon drafted a constitution bringing the German states and Prussia together, forming the confederation of Germany on January 18, 1871. The unification process was almost complete except for one hurdle, France (Sullivan 571).
             The next step to for German unification was to obtain the support or neutrality of Italy, Russia, and France. Making treaties with these countries enabled Germany to have the most powerful allies of Europe, but peace with France would not last very long. .
             Germany and France confronted each other in 1870 when the Spanish Crown was offered to a Prussian Prince.
