A Tour Through a Murderers Mind

Edgar Allen Poe is thought to be the father of the modern day horror novel. Poe developed a writing style that captivated readers, as well as horrified them. In his two works, "The Cask of Amontillado," and "The Tell-Tale Heart," Poe invites the reader to explore the mind of a premeditated murderer. Edgar's use of first person narrative allows the murderer's personality to add an unexpected dimension of suspense.
"The Cask of Amontillado," and "The Tell-Tale Heart," has many similarities other than the first person narrative. In both works the murders take place at night in dark places. "It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend.arrived at the deep crypt, in which the foulness of the air caused our flambeaux rather to glow than flame."(Poe, The Cask of Amontillado 1593-95) "His room was black as pitch with the thick of darkness, (for the shutters were closed fastened, through the fear of robbers,)" (Poe, The Tell-Tale Heart 1573).
Another similarity is both victims knew and trusted their killers. In "The Cask of Amontillado," the conversation and actions of both characters reveals, Fortunado does not realize is his impending fate. "Come." I said with decision, "we will go back; your health is precious." Enough," he said. He took my arm and we proceeded."(Poe, The Cask of Amontillado 1594) In "The Tell-Tale Heart," the murder openly admits he loves the old man; it is the evil eye he despises. "Every morning, when the day broke, I went boldly into his chamber, and spoke courageously to him, calling him by name in a hearty tone."(Poe, The Tell-Tale Heart 1572).
Neither victim fully understood why they were murdered. Fortunado, according to Montressor, had made an insult that could not be forgiven. However, the actual insult was never known. Even in the end as Montressor is laying the last of the bricks, Fortunado still has hopes this all be just a hoaxes.
