Television is a major influence on society. Most households own at least one television set and this gives them access to tons of content. There are many programs on that are somewhat connected to the American dream. Entertainment Tonight is a very popular program that glorifies celebrities. It brings the viewers inside celebrity houses, lifestyles etc. It makes the viewers feel like they are actually in a five million dollar mansion, or at the Oscar's, or that we are actually marrying Jennifer Lopez. This program shapes the American dream for us. By constantly showing us how celebrities live, it makes society want to live like that, therefore setting standards for the American dream. Before having a house was sufficient enough to please many people, it was their dream, now we need a mansion, a garage full of cars, an island and so on. Most TV shows don't make sense. In Friends, they live in an apartment in New York and they somehow pay rent without a job at times. Television shapes the dream and it changes our perspectives and our goals about attaining the dream.
Movies.
Movies are always directed towards an age level. Teenagers have different interests than adults and children and males have different interests than females so movies tend to be specified towards an age group. "Titanic" was aimed at teenage girls and "National Lampoon's Van Wilder" was mainly aimed at teenagers in general. Most movies incorporate the American dream in it, or at least parts of it. The good guy ALWAYS wins in movies, because we cannot imagine ourselves the bad guy. Movies like TV are unrealistic, except movies based on real events. But it is quite impossible for an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie or a Vin Diesel movie to actually happen. Out-running an avalanche on a snowboard while fighting off terrorists does not seem real, or even possible. But in the end they always get the girl. And that is what people want to see.
