What also appealed to the youth of the 50's was the Beats defiance towards authorities. Rock and Roll was greatly liked by the youth because it was a blunt alternative to other forms of music. Rock and Roll has always been a very unique style of music. On The Road was so appealing to the youth of the 50's because it glorified and magnified the ideologies of the Beats and because it stressed music as something more than just pleasant tunes. Dean's obsession with one particular musician shows that music can be a person's life. With World War II finished, everyone felt freer and as a result the youth of this age didn't want to settle down. This was the perfect time period for On The Road to be printed. The authorities found this book so shocking because it was glamorizing a non-conservative style of life. People were constantly on the move and wasting money on useless materialistic objects. The characters in On The Road continuously satisfied their immediate compulsive desires. Authorities felt that this kind of negative influence would taint the youth of America. Instead it opened a whole new world for the youth of America.
             While there was little or no youth culture, prior to the 1950's, everything began to change once On The Road was printed. First of all, the characters in the story loved music. This triggered frenzy in the youth of America. Suddenly it became very profitable to invest in a youth culture. Now advertisers began targeting teenagers. Rock and Roll began to mostly appeal to the younger crowds. Now products for entertainment purposes were produced and targeted for the youth of America. The investors began to slowly realize that a shift was now occurring in spending and buying power. Younger people had more power to spend and this played out wonderfully for record labels. In One The Road Dean enjoys driving at very high speeds. This as well as other sources influenced the youth of America as well.
