III. Soon commercial rap begins to hit the streets.
a. The Sugarhill Gang (a pre-fabricated group assembled by record mogul Sylvia Roberts) records "Rapper's Delight," the first commercial rap record. .
b. The Fatback Band hires radio DJ King Tim III to provide a rap for one of their b-sides controversy continues over which is the "first" rap on record, but neither one reflects the ongoing hip-hop scene on the streets.
c. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were popular throughout New York by 1978, but they did not record until the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" showed that rap records could be hits in 1979. .
d. Flash and the Five recorded "Superrappin"" for Harlem-based Enjoy Records in 1979, before signing with Sugarhill Records the next year. (Davey).
IV. Guys like Grandmaster Flash did a bit of the groundwork, but Run DMC were almost solely responsible for bringing rap music to the masses to enjoy the popularity that it does today. .
a. Run DMC were responsible for pretty much every first in rap music: .
i. The first rappers to earn a gold album.
ii. The first rappers to earn a platinum album.
iii. The first to have two albums go gold, .
iv. The first to go multi-platinum, .
v. The first to have a video on MTV, .
vi. The first to appear on ``American Bandstand'' and ``Saturday Night Live'', .
vii. And the first rap band to appear on the covers on Rolling Stone and Spin magazines. (Light, 104).
V. Hip-hop is notorious for short-lived careers, but LL Cool J is the inevitable exception to this rule. .
a. LL has been cranking out the hits since 1984. .
b. The Queens native first made waves with the release of "I Need A Beat," the first release ever on Russell Simmons' powerful Def Jam label. .
c. With over 20 million albums sold, LL Cool J is one of the most successful hip-hop artists in history.
