Character relationships with The Tempest

Prospero's character changes throughout the play. He grows wiser during his years on the island and realises that it is better to forgive those who have wronged him then to take revenge. A good example of this is when he says to his brother Antonio, "For you, most wicked sir, whom to call my brother would infect even my mouth, I do forgive thy rankest fault - all of them; and require my dukedom of thee, which perforce, I know, thou must restore." This tells us that Prospero is willing to forgive all Antonio's sins, even his worst, and Antonio is obligied to return the title of Duke of Milan to Prospero. .
Early in the first scene in which both Miranda and Prospero appear, Miranda enquires whether or not Prospero has raised the tempest by using his `art", or magic, on which they become dependent while living on the island. When Prospero's title was restored and he returned to Milan by ship he threw his magical books and staff overboard saying,"Now my charms are o"erthrown and what strength I have's mine own, which is most faint: now, "tis true, I must be here confined by you or sent to Naples. Let me not, since I have my dukedom got, and pardoned the deceiver, dwell in this bare island by your spell." Prospero has decided to abandon his magic and rule Milan as a fair, honest and trustworthy man unaided by magic.

Prospero is Miranda's father. They are very close as until the storm Prospero would be the only human Miranda could remember speaking and communicating with. When she was smaller and Prospero was the Duke of Milan, Miranda had several courtiers, though she couldn't remember what they looked like or much more about them. Miranda is always appreciative of Prospero's advice and assistance.

Ariel enticed Ferdinand to Prospero's cell by playing music and singing. Miranda was sitting in Prospero's cell and when she saw Ferdinand for the first time she belivied him to be a spirit, as the only other men she had seen in her life-time were Prospero and Caliban, who was half monster.
