Apartheid in South Africa

Even so with the little population of whites they had more power than the blacks. Little by little the whites began to dominate the blacks not in population but in power. Davidson stated that the government agreed to have and hopefully maintain white supremacy (5). They believed that whites were the civilized race and were entitled to benefits that others were not offered. Even though there were more blacks than whites, the whites were in charge because the government supported them.
A major effect was the web of laws that prevented non-white people especially South African blacks from having freedom and voice. According to the article "Colonial Racism Carried to an extreme", "The white people of this country have formed what is known as the Union of South Africa-a union in which we have no voice in making the laws and no part in their administration" (Davidson, 2). Apartheid took away the freedom of non-white people. The non-white people had no choice but to follow the unjust laws, the laws that covered every aspect of life. Davidson said that in 1953 a Separate Amenities Act is established this law separated public facilities for whites and non-whites (2). Another thing they prohibited was the marriage and sexual relationships from different colored people. They thought that mixing with another race would be a harm to their society. Parents would even send their kids to a different country so they would not have to mix with non-white people. The government introduced a series of laws that allowed the government power to arrest people without trial (Davidson, 4). For this reason many innocent people were put in jail. These laws not only affected certain things, but it affected their everyday life. .
Education is something we should all have a chance to get, but the black people were limited in that. Basil remarked that in 1946, the government was paying 20 times as much for white education than black education (3).
