Now I have been working in a computer company as a computer engineer for a couple of years. Before, I was just a low - pay office clerk. The turning point of my career was the study of the certification called MCSE. This certificate changed me from an office clerk to a computer engineer of Silicon Valley. .
When I just came to America ten years ago, my spoken English was very poor and I did not have a degree. It was so difficult to find my first job because of these. One time I tried to schedule an interview for an office job over the phone. After I begged the secretary badly, she finally let me to sneak in for the interview even that was the last day for that job opening. The last thing I needed to get from her was their address. When she told me that they were located at Montgomery Street, I asked her how to spell Montgomery because I needed to look it up from the map. This nice woman sighed and said this job was not suitable to me. I decided to look for a job that required skills that are more technical and less talking. Since I had studied in college in China for computer major for two years, I thought I might get one. It turned out that I was lack of experience, and I my knowledge was not complete enough for the computer positions I applied for. Later on, I work as an office clerk in an Electronic Manufacturing company. In this company, I only worked on the customer orders, quotes and complains. Next to my table, it sat the network engineer called Steven who took care of our computer network. When our data could not be pulled out or the network was down, we had to wait for Steven to fix it. He sat in front of our computers to run some scripts to fix the errors. That looked exactly like what I learned in my college! Steven's responsibility completely reminded me of my computer dream: I was already a junior of Computer Science major. I did not want to be only an office clerk!.
