Indian Camp - Hemingway

             The son is an intern, within the medical field, observing his father who is a doctor. His father brought the son along to witness a rare birth by a woman across the water. He explains to the son how babies are usually born head first but in this case the baby was going to come out feet first. To deliver this baby he was going to have to do conduct a caesarian section. While the woman was in labor the husband was in the bunk above her smoking a cigar after he cut his foot few days before. The woman screaming caused everyone to be very annoyed and stir crazy to hear such gut wrenching screams. Once the father delivered the baby he explained to his son that he had to stitch her back up after doing the surgery, he refused to look assuming that he certainly had enough viewing experience for one day. You later find out that this was no ordinary operation and that he conducted it with a jack knife and sewing her up with nine foot tapered gut leaders, which is amazing. The boys uncle explained to him that the fathers are the one's that take this labor thing the hardest and that you should really go talk to the proud father and admire his strength for taking it so quietly. Later you find out that the father slashed his throat, possibly because he couldn't take it anymore. From that the son had many questions about if it was normal for a father to want to kill himself or a mother as well. The boy's father was very upset that his young son had to see such events occur. In the end they both boated away while the boy left with thoughts that he would never be the one to die.
