Rooster

The man then stops jutting his head like a rooster and adjusts his tie. This movement shows the similarity between men of the sixties and roosters.
There is also four males behind the lead guy, however, whilst he is dancing they are only doing very small basic movements and are standing back. Again this relationship in space represents the rooster's position in the farmyard as boss.
When the female enters the space, she is alone after each male dancers with her, he turns away again stressing the males supremacy as does the use of levels. The female is always lower than the males when she dances with him. The solo girl uses a lot of passive energy which contrasts the dynamics of the males who are stronger and confident. When the other girls enter, they all swing their hips which help create femineity.
The motifs of this section are especially important to set up the meaning Bruce is conveying to the audience. The cocking of the boys head (representative of the rooster) and the adjusting of tie and cuffs and also the slicking of hair is all symbolic of male arrogance. The females do the movement of crossing their leg on the other one and crossing their arms over their body which is a protection device, also a close of sexuality and then opening.
The second section in Rooster is choreographed to Lady Jane and shows the formality of relationships. The piece has now moved from the focus being on the guys to exploring courtly dance and couples. Whenever the lead couple are dancing together they are situated at the front of the stage with the others behind them usually in a straight line to show structure and tradition.
The dynamics here are stylish and graceful with the movement tightly bound and ordered. There are no strong accents and the tempo has slowed down. When the guy and girl get down on the ground together it suggests something outside of the boundaries of traditional relationships and then the girl is picked up and taken away by the other guys.
