Many times when applying for a job an employer will look for someone with previous work experience. Therefore, as students work they acquire work ethic that future employers look for.
What are the advantages of holding a job and attending school? First, it provides students with a work ethic. Mark Rowh states "part time jobs look good on a resume." And after graduation the job that was worked while going to school can often help the student get another job because the employers look to hire people who have already had work experience. Second, working allows students to expand their career alternatives. A job can help find what type of career the student would be good at. Many times a student can get a job in a field of interest. The student can then decide if this type of job is something they would want to continue. (Rowh, 1). .
A job can also teach a student to manage their time more efficiently. When a student has a job they tend to waste less time because they have less time. Because of this, the students make their homework and other duties a top priority. Fourth, a job can teach, "people skills" something that everyone will need. When students hold a job they will interact with all types of people. Where as in school students only interact with other students and teachers (Rowh, 2). J. Bosworth states that many students say they work because it gives them a chance to socialize and to meet new people who have the same interests that they do. This also allows them to meet adults who have been through school and can offer them advise on their future. Sometimes, these contacts can be beneficial in the future when the student is looking for work.
What are the disadvantages of having a job and going to school? There is bound to be scheduling conflicts. When students hold a job they cannot always expect to get off whenever they want. The student may be needed on days they don't want to work, or on days all their friends have plans.
